I don’t really like subsidies of any sort, so it’s not surprising that I’m not a fan of the cash for clunkers program. I don’t particularly like the definition of “clunkers” the program uses, as many cars that should be considered clunkers are excluded. However, if the objective is to get people to buy cars, then the cash for clunkers program is as effective, if not more effective, than other gimmicks used by dealers and manufacturers. The program generated a lot of interest.
