First, we have this post over at naked capitalism: Supreme Court Guts Due Process Protection.
Roman citizens enjoyed a right to a trial, a right of appeal, and could not be tortured, whipped, or executed except if found guilty of treason, and anyone charged with treason could demand a trial in Rome. We have regressed more than 2000 years with this appalling ruling.
The second post quotes the first in its entirety, but for those with ADHD, I thought I’d list the Naked Capitalism post first. From Washington’s Blog, Is America Still a Nation of Laws? I like the lead-in better on this one.
I’m more than a little disappointed that Eric Holder isn’t bashing heads on this one. I could not have been more impressed by his confirmation hearing. What happened to him?
Now for the lighter side of injustice. I got a kick out of seeing these two stories today (both via reddit):
Being naked at home is a John Dillinger-esque crime? - Guy makes his morning (5am) coffee at home in the buff. Woman trespassing on his property sees him. Guy’s junk could not be seen from the street, only from on his property. Guy didn’t know people were cutting across his yard. Guy gets convicted of indecent exposure (“purposefully display[ing] one’s genitals in public, causing others to be alarmed or offended”).
Cop Gets Off. And Then Gets Off. - Cop runs license plates for every stripper at a club. Cop pulls stripper over and gets her number. Cop makes phone calls to stripper. Cop disables GPS in car without authorization. Cop pulls over stripper a second time. Cop ejaculates on stripper during a traffic stop. Cop acquitted of any wrongdoing.
I’d still rather have a trial by jury than not have such an option.
