I just want one day (weekends don’t count, and MLK Day will only count if it’s negative) where I don’t see multiple job cut headlines when I go through the news. Here are the two from today (there were others). Both are from the AP via Yahoo Finance.
AMD to cut 1,100 workers, 9 pct of staff:
Advanced Micro Devices Inc. plans to cut 1,100 jobs, 9 percent of its global staff, and slash the remaining employees’ pay as the chip maker hopes its third round of layoffs in a year can help it get through a brutal market for computer sales.
The Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company said Friday that 900 workers will have their positions cut. The rest of the reductions are coming from attrition and the previously announced sale of a business unit.
The company has 15,000 workers currently, but it is spinning off its manufacturing operations, which have 3,000 employees who are not affected by Friday’s announcement. So AMD’s cut of 1,100 jobs amounts to 9 percent of the remaining 12,000 workers.
AMD, your business plan is this: Build chips, sell at a discount to Intel. Intel created the Celeron line specifically to compete with you. You’re awesome for that. On balance, you suck. You didn’t manage your company well through good times, what makes you think you can manage it well in bad times? This is the third round of layoffs? You want help determining who should go? How about all of senior management? How about all of middle management for that matter?
Report: Pfizer cutting up to 2,400 sales jobs:
Drug giant Pfizer Inc. reportedly plans to lay off nearly a third of its 8,000 salespeople.
…
Earlier this week, Pfizer, the world’s No. 1 drugmaker by revenue, confirmed it is cutting the jobs of up to 800 scientists and other research staff around the world.
Pfizer, your business plan is this: Make drugs to put blood in my penis (Viagra). Make drugs to prevent heart attacks (Lipitor). Make new drugs to make blood do other things. Keep selling drugs. Cutting scientists and sales? Probably not good for the plan. Instead? Fire the other people. The ones who don’t make or sell the drugs. Ok, this is probably indicative of the downturn. Times are tough.
One day. Is it too much?
