Crazy Nut Job
Job Cuts 2/12/09

Now that I’m no longer keeping an arbitrary score, I’m not going to bias against foreign companies. I’ll let the news sites do that for me. The headlines:

  1. Virgin, Ryanair Cut 800 Jobs as Slump Squeezes Travel — Didn’t I just see Branson in drag? Yes, yes I did. Jackass. Laugh and moon the camera because you open a new route … while you cut 600 jobs. The other 200 are from Ryanair.

  2. Australian Employers Unexpectedly Add 1,200 Workers — I love this headline. I picture some CEO walking into a large, open office to find it full of activity while expecting tumbleweeds. It would be an excellent sitcom scene. Oh, and it’s an excellent headline for Australia. (UPDATE: The jobless rate also rose 30 basis points)

  3. Google to Shut Down Radio Business, Cut up to 40 Jobs — I’m a little surprised we’re getting a round two from Google so soon.

  4. Pioneer Sees Wider Annual Loss, Will Cut 10,000 Jobs — 16% of their permanent workforce and a few thousand temps. Cuts in Japan, the UK, and the US.

  5. Irish economy grounded by falling prices, job cuts — If someone has some good news on the Irish economy, please email me.

  6. Terex falls to 4Q loss, plans massive job cuts — Well sonuva… this news would have derailed my celebration yesterday. I’m not clear on which cuts are new and which are old, but they appear to be in excess of 1,000 jobs being cut.

  7. Tenet subsidiary announces job cuts — 57 jobs isn’t exactly huge, but this is another health care related layoff. That’s spooky.

These last two aren’t strictly job cut related.

  1. ‘Justice Denied’ in New Hampshire as Recession Delays Law Cases — The state suspends trials to save money. This guy can’t open his small business without winning a civil case against his former business partners. I can’t get too worked up over this, but I did find it rather interesting.

  2. U.S. Economy: Retail Sales Unexpectedly Halt Slide — This is interesting. Retail sales are still way down over the last few periods, but this is a bit of a bright spot.

I’m rather pleased with Australia, even if Pioneer should trump.
