There are other ways that the statistics have been manipulated that are not mentioned. For example: the definition of unemployment has changed a number of times, yielding a lower number each time. This makes many historical comparisons of unemployment numbers an apples/oranges problem. There are also complicating factors specific to that time: the mass migration due to the dust bowl had a huge impact on various local economies.
