These first two headlines grabbed my attention:
S&P Sued by Ex-Ratings Manager for Targeting Women in Job Cuts — Given that the credit ratings agencies are actually hell-spawn, I’m just going to believe that this is actually a conspiracy to distract us from something far worse than gender discrimination. I’ll bet that they’re actually eating babies… I obviously have nothing meaningful to say. Read the story, expect more.
Latinos, blacks losing jobs at a faster rate — The non-racist explanations ring a little hollow. They’re recent additions to the workforce; last hired / first fired? Show me that the statistics are controlled for age (I hear that young people are recent additions to the workforce), and it will sound a little more believable.
And these are the normal jobs headlines:
Mitsubishi UFJ to Cut 1,000 Jobs, Close 50 Branches — Japanese banks are still having trouble.
Qantas to Cut Up to 100 Senior Executive Positions, Review Says — Airline troubles aren’t that surprising, either.
Charlotte Observer eliminating jobs — 15% of staff, or 82 jobs.
Daily Mail group to cut 1,000 jobs — Newspapers everywhere are getting hammered.
Gannett to Have Second Week of Unpaid Leave, Cut Pay — I wonder if the decline in USA Today sales are tied to the collapsing newspaper industry or the collapsing hotel industry. The free copy from hotel rooms are the only way I ever read USA Today.
Honda Offers to Guarantee U.K. Jobs in Return for 1-Year Pay Cut — And that’s two pay cut stories in a row.
Corning to close Danville plant; 200 out of jobs — These were part of previously announced cuts.
Things are depressing again on the jobs front.
